Marbella is a city and municipality in southern Spain. It is part of the province of Málaga in Andalusia. Marbella is home to the Association of Municipalities for the region and is the head of the judicial district that bears its name. Marbella is located on the Mediterranean Sea, between Málaga and the Gibraltar Strait. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountains. Old Town (Casco Antiguo) Marbella features ancient city walls and two historical suburbs, the Barrio Alto, which extends north, and the Barrio Nuevo, located to the east. Marbella is a popular destination and home for aristocrats and celebrities. It is also a major luxury cruise ship and yacht harbour.

There are three buildings of particular note in this plaza, including the Renaissance style town hall built in 1568, the Gothic and Renaissance Mayor’s house featuring and fresco murals on the inside, and the Chapel of Santiago, the oldest religious building in the city that dates from the 15th century. The Golden Mile of Nueva Andalucia is a four mile stretch situated between Marbella and Puerto Banús, featuring some of the most luxurious residences in Marbella. Among them you will find the Palace of King Fahd, and landmark hotels such as the Hotel Marbella Club and the Puente Romano Hotel. Dining options in Marbella include the Buenaventura Restaurant – a very popular Spanish Andalusian style establishment set in the Old Town. It has indoor and outdoor seating, and is famous for its selection of red wines. Dishes might include roast pork flavoured with cumin or grilled fresh fish.

Transport Information

The nearest major airport to Marbella is Málaga Airport (AGP/LEMG). This airport offers international and domestic flights from Malaga, Spain and is 51 km (32 miles) from the city centre. Another major airport in the area is Gibraltar Airport (GIB/LXGB), which features international flights from Gibraltar and is 77 km (48 miles) from Marbella. The AP-7 motorway runs north along the coast to Málaga and south to Algeciras.
