Northampton is a large town in the East Midlands region of England, roughly 70 miles north-west of London and 50 miles south-east of Birmingham. The town has been inhabited for several millennia and was occupied throughout the periods of Roman and then Anglo Saxon dominance of England. Its rich history helped shaped the visual character of Northampton, which includes some incredible landmarks like Northampton Castle, the All Saints’ Church and the Northampton Guildhall. Sitting on the River Nene, the modern town centre is a busy and thriving commercial and enterprise district and home to a wide variety of businesses and organisations. Among the more important parts of Northampton town itself are the areas around Derngate, which is generally referred to as being the town’s Cultural Quarter.

Other very sizable Northampton-based businesses include the food wholesaling giant the Booker Group and the high-performance engineering company Cosworth. International operators with significant office space holdings in the town include the likes of soft drink powerhouse Coca-Cola, the finance firm Barclaycard and the electronics maker Panasonic.

Things to do in Northampton

Northampton’s Cultural Quarter is a great place to spend time and to start getting to know the town. The quarter is home to Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, the Royal & Derngate theatre complex and a house at 78 Derngate that was famously redesigned by modernist architectural icon Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Other great places to visit in Northampton include its new and old commercial hubs in Market Square, which has been around since the 13th century, and the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, which offers some of the latest and best retail outlets. Sports fans visiting the town should head over to Franklin’s Gardens to see some top class rugby union and the Northampton Saints. For some excellent places to eat out, try Frank’s Steakhouse, Les Olives or Sophia’s Restaurant. Or for a traditional pub atmosphere, check out the Yeoman Of England, the White Elephant or the Malt Shovel Tavern, where you can always expect a warm welcome and quality real ales.
