The Isle of Dogs is an area of east London that lies on the north bank of the River Thames and is surrounded on three sides by the river as it meanders through east London towards the City. Throughout much of its history, the Isle of Dogs was primarily characterised by marshlands but the creation of several large-scale docks in the early 19th century turned the area into a thriving commercial and industrial hub. Today the Isle remains a dockland district but it is best known for the business centres and enormous skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, part of a near 2 kilometre squared enterprise zone radically redeveloped during the 1980s and 1990s.

Setting up your business here

There is somewhere in the region of 14 million square feet of office and retail space in use within the Isle of Dogs, with the bulk of that space found in Canary Wharf and within office towers such as One Canada Square, once Britain’s tallest building. Other notable buildings and office space towers in the Isle of Dogs include 8 Canada Square, One Churchill Place and 25 Cabot Square. Companies operating from office bases in Canary Wharf include the multinational law firm Clifford Chance, the accountancy giant KPMG, the media group Thomson Reuters and banking groups such as Barclays, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup. The West India Docks, Canary Wharf and most parts of the Isle of Dogs are connected to each other, as well as central and east London by the Docklands Light Railway and the Tube.

Things to do in Isle of Dogs

As home to one of the largest purpose-built business locations in Europe, the Isle of Dogs is able to boast an exceptionally healthy supply of great places to eat out and to enjoy a relaxing drink. There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a restaurant in Canary Wharf; some of the best include Royal China, Roka and Carluccio’s. Meanwhile, for places to grab a drink in the Isle of Dogs, try the Boisdale of Canary Wharf, All Bar One or the Ship on Westferry Road. For other attractions and interesting places to visit, the Museum of London Docklands is well worth a look and the O2 Arena is just a short hop across the River Thames towards Greenwich, offering a variety of eateries and a cinema if you don’t have time to take in a show.
