Stockport is a well known town in Greater Manchester, located in the metropolitan borough of the same name. It is situated on the River Mersey, at the point where two other rivers – Goyt and Tame – meet. In the 16th century, the area was largely a centre for rope and hemp production. By the 18th century, the primary business in the area was silk manufacturing and hat making. Today, the town is not dependant on any single industry for its economy, but has a varied base, making it a prosperous and flourishing town. Great examples of its history can be witnessed in local attractions such as the Hat Works Museum, which has the distinction of being UK’s only dedicated hat museum. Other notable attractions include The Staircase House and Stockport Air Raid Shelters.
