Ankara is Turkey’s second largest city and the capital city for the country. Located in the heart of Turkey in Anatolia, Ankara is an important centre of commerce and industry. This is because it lies in the middle of the country’s transportation centre of highways and rail. All foreign embassies and main government buildings are located in Ankara.

Historically, Ankara is known for serving as the marketing centre for local area farms. It is also the centre for production of Mohair and Angora wool, which comes from the Angora goat. Mohair has been an important export for this region of the world for centuries. Other important products in the Ankara region are pears and Kavakldere wine which produced locally. The global arms industry is important to Ankara, with the International Defence Exhibition Fair as one of the largest expositions of arms in the world. The Turkish Aerospace and Defence industry is also located in Ankara including such companies as MKE Havelsan, Aselsan, FNSS, Roketsan and Nurol. Entertainment And Dining Out

There are interesting historical sites and museums around Ankara including Antkabir located in the Anttepe part of Ankara. Antkabir is a mausoleum for the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. A museum is attached to the mausoleum and houses historical items from Ataturk’s life and from the founding of the Republic. Also of interest is the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations located at the entrance of Ankara Castle. This beautifully restored covered bazaar called a bedesten, has within its walls artefacts from the Hatti, Paleolithic, Neolithic, Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, and Urartian times. For dining out, Ankara boasts many fine and interesting restaurants including Zenger Pasa Konagi which in addition to offering traditional Turkish food such as pide, and meze, the restaurant also houses Ottoman artefacts and a brilliant view of the city. One of the most famous and stylish restaurants in Ankara which draws the rich and famous is Kale Washington located in the old town of Ankara. The restaurant features distinctive Turkish favourites including halep isi kebap and su boregi.

Transport Information

The Esenbo International Airport, located in the north-east corner of Ankara, is the main airport for the city. Public transportation in the city is served by a bus network which travels around the city. The Ankara Intercity Bus Terminal is the central bus terminal for Ankara. For travel by rail, the Ankara Central Station is a major rail hub for the Turkish State Railways, which serves the entire country. In addition, a new subway system and the Yuksek Tren high speed rail service are also available although service is limited. The city is directly linked to Istanbul via the O-4, and is encircled by the O-20, which both provide efficient means of travel to and around the city.
