Guilford is a prominent town and busy economic centre within the county of Surrey in south-east England. The town lies roughly half way between London and Portsmouth, with the capital just less than 30 miles away to the north-east. Guildford is the designated county town of Surrey and a historic centre of administration for the region. The town’s economic development was helped by the creation of the Basingstoke Canal, which links it and the wider region to the River Thames via what is known as the Wey Navigation network. Guildford itself sits on the River Wey and within the Surrey Hills, which helps give the town some of its defining characteristics, such as its gently ascending High Street. Other great places to spend time, to shop and to find somewhere to eat out in Guildford include the areas around Chapel Street and the Lanes, or North Street, which hosts a traditional street market every Friday and Saturday.

Setting up your business here

Guildford benefits considerably as a business location from being so well-connected to central London and its various major business districts. As well as the capital, though, Guildford is easily accessed from cities like Southampton and Portsmouth and major towns like Brighton and Eastbourne on the south coast of England. Its location and supply of quality serviced office space has helped Guildford to attract a large number of major international employers to the area such as the finance group Allianz, the pharmaceuticals giant Colgate-Palmolive and electronics companies Phillips and Ericsson.

Things to do in Guildford

Guildford has some great sights to see and places to visit, not least its castle, which dates back to the 11th century. Next to the castle, you’ll find Guildford Museum, which houses numerous exhibitions delving into the town’s eventful and fascinating history. Another excellent visitor attraction in the area is Clandon Park, which the National Trust describes as having one of the most complete examples of a Palladian Mansion in England. Guildford also boasts a number of renowned performing arts venues, including the Electric Theatre and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Central Guildford is also a great place to eat out with restaurants like the Chanda Thai, the Olivio Ristorante Italiano and Zizzi’s all helping to enhance the town’s reputation in that regard. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a great place to grab a drink in Guildford, try the White Horse, which overlooks the River Wey, or one of the two best pubs near the castle in the Keep or the Pews.
