Woking is a large town in the county of Surrey and southern England, not far outside south-west London. The town as an urban location is comprised of numerous small villages and suburbs, many of which are inhabited by business men and women who commute daily to various parts of central London. Woking has existed since at least 1086 when its presence in west Surrey was recorded in the Doomsday Book. The population of the town grew dramatically in the years after railway links between Woking and London were established in the mid-1800s. Woking now supports dozens of small businesses, as well as a number of large organisations and companies. The town is also the setting used by HG Wells in his classic science fiction novel The War of the Worlds.

Setting up your business here

Woking boasts a good supply of quality modern office space, particularly in central parts of the town and close to its main station. One of the more prominent office developments in the town is Export House, commonly known as the BAT Building, in reference to its initial tenant British American Tobacco. Significant local employers in Woking today include the Mouchel Group, a provider of various infrastructure and business services now headquartered in the town and at Export House. Woking is also home to the McLaren Group, which is the main operator behind the McLaren Mercedes Formula One racing team, and McLaren Automotive, which manufactures a variety of high-performance vehicles and technologies. Other businesses with offices in Woking include financial and business service companies Cap Gemini and Fidessa, and energy sector companies such as Kuwait Petroleum and Mustang.

Things to do in Woking

Woking is a relaxed and attractive place to spend time and it benefits enormously from being only 25 minutes by train from central London. There are a number of modern and well-kept public realms in the town, as well as purpose-built retail and entertainment destinations. Visitor attractions in Woking include the Lightbox Art and Heritage Centre, which was designed by the architects behind the London Eye and exhibits a very interesting variety of modern and thought-provoking art throughout the year. One particular work of art well worth a look in Woking is the Martian Tripod, a sculpture and public art piece paying homage to The World of the Worlds and its author, former Woking resident, HG Wells. There are dozens of great places to eat out in Woking, with L’Aroma Ristorante, London House and the Anchor among the best. The town is also well catered in terms of excellent pubs and places to grab a drink, with the best in that regard including the Cricketers, on Horsell Birch, and the Sovereigns, on Guildford Road.
