Denton is a small town that is located 5 miles from Manchester city centre. It falls under the local authority of the metropolitan borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester. Historically, it has been one of the largest centres for the manufacture of hats, with numerous hat factories doing business even after the turn of the 21st century. Today, even though most of the factories have shut down, the area is still famous for the hats that it has produced over the years. The popular phrase ‘mad as a hatter’ originates from Denton. The area is also home to famous landmarks such as St. Lawrence’s Church, which is more than 500 years old and has the status of a Grade II listed building.

Business Information

Historically a hat-manufacturing and coal-mining town, modern-day Denton has a few remnants of its historical past. Denton Colliery, one of the largest coal-mining companies in Denton, still occupies office space at Stockport Road. However, the hospitality industry is one of the main employers in the area today, followed by the health industry. Tourism contributes significantly to the economy of Denton, which benefits from its proximity to Manchester.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Denton boasts some great pubs and bars that provide excellent options for night-time entertainment. The Fletchers Arms, Stable Gate and the Hanging Gate Inn are popular with locals and offer an insight into the after-hours scene in the area. A fantastic meal can be had at San Remo, which is a well-known Italian restaurant in the area. For a curry house that serves up authentic Indian cuisine, Shuhag is the place to go.

Transport Information

The closest railway station is in nearby Manchester, providing access to numerous destinations across the country. The town is well connected through bus and road routes, with regular coach services departing to Manchester throughout the day.
